On July 30 at 8 p.m. the Boston Militia (10-1) will face the San Diego Surge (11-0) for the Woman’s Football Alliance championship. The game is taking place at Pennington Field in Bedford, Texas and will be streamed on SportsCastLive.

In 2010, the Militia capped an undefeated regular season by rolling through the playoffs en route to their first Independent Women’s Football League title. In the off-season, the Militia moved to the more competitive WFA. Now they are on the brink of back-to-back titles, albeit in different organizations.

It won’t be easy. The undefeated Surge have scored 56 points per game this year while limiting opponents to seven per game. (The Militia have averaged 45 points per game on offense while holding opponents to an average of 13.)

The Militia advanced to the title game on the heels of a 46-18 thumping of the Indy Crash at Dilboy Stadium (110 Alewife Brook Pkwy) back on July 16.

In the 50-23 win against the Force, the Militia used an arsenal of running backs to amass a whopping 269 yards on the ground. Four running backs — Chante Bonds, Whitney Zelee, Stacey Tiamfook and Dorothy Donaldson — each gained at least 49 yards. All four running backs scored, with Donaldson finding paydirt twice.

The air force was also lethal, with quarterback Allison Cahill completing 13 of 17 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns: a 60-yard catch-and-run by wide receiver Amy Saur and an 18-yard toss to wide receiver Adrienne Smith. Place kicker Ashley Snyder, pictured above, added a 26-yard field goal and five extra points.

On May 6, the League of American Bicyclists honored Somerville as a “bronze-level” Bicycle Friendly Community.

One day later the New England Bicycle Expo (NEBE) arrived at Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Ave). Exhibitors included bike-related businesses and organizations from all over the United States.

Of course, Scout immediately took an interest in the only Somerville-based business we saw: 2ndsuit, a maker of bicycle caps run from the Davis Sq home of proprietor Matthew Reineck.

Last summer, Reineck started the business when he got sick and tired of seeing his friend — a man named Derek Enos — wearing “the same nasty cap every day.” An industrial designer by trade who moved to the Boston area from Seattle six years ago to work for Boston-based musical instrument manufacturer First Act, Reineck already knew how to design and sew. It was just a matter of applying his skills to a new product.

Reineck sources almost all his material from the Goodwill Store in Davis Sq (230 Elm St). His caps sell for $20 or $25. Reineck sold 15 of them last weekend at Somerville Open Studios and estimates he’s sold 30 all told, including several to Cambridge bike shop Ata Cycle.

Exhibitors like Reineck are just the tip of the NEBE iceberg. The Expo runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both today at tomorrow. Throughout both days there will be presentations on subjects such as “Organized Bike Rides in the Boston Region” and “Cycling in Somerville: Practical Strategies to Implement Infrastructure Improvements.”

There are also several organized bike rides departing from the Armory on both Saturday and Sunday, including a ride to Taza Chocolate (561 Windsor St), a Tour of Somerville Bicycle Companies and a Tour of the Community Bike Path Extension.

On top of all this, there will be live music at the Armory on both days during the event. Be sure to check it out.

And stay tuned for the next Scout — due out in early July — when we’ll bring you a road map of outstanding Somerville rides and a primer on how to make sure you’re ready for a summer of cycling.

Every April, nearly 20,000 runners worldwide make their way to Hopkinton, Massachusetts to participate in the Boston Marathon. For some, it’s tradition. Some do it for the challenge or to honor a loved one. Others find spiritual gratification in running, while many simply find happiness in running. For one local, the Marathon is a means of raising awareness and funding for an organization he believes in.

Kurt Nelson, 34-year-old social worker and seven-year Somervillian, is currently training for his very first marathon. Not your typical, seasoned Marathon participant, Nelson has only recently gained interest in the sport.

Nelson credits his interest to Wediko Children’s Services, a Boston nonprofit aimed at improving children’s lives through therapeutic programs, where he has been an employee since 2006.

Each Friday afternoon, Nelson would join a group of his Wediko peers in running to decompress together before separating for the weekend. This routine motivated the coworkers to enter local races, fueling his interest in running and allowing for Wediko to apply for fund-raising numbers with the Boston Athletic Association.

As a social worker, Nelson has seen firsthand how the individual and family therapy services provided by Wediko change lives for the better. This is exactly why he has chosen to run the marathon in support of an organization he works hard for.

“My approach as a therapist increasingly is a personal-trainer model of helping students become stronger one step at a time,” stated Nelson, “sometimes facing seemingly insurmountable odds. It feels like a fitting metaphor [to run] as a way to raise money for Wediko.”

To gain support for both his training and the organization, Nelson will be hosting a fundraiser at Flatbread Pizza Company (45 Day St) at Sacco’s Bowl Haven on Tuesday, February 22. From 5pm until 11:30pm, Flatbread will donate a percentage of all pizza sales to Nelson’s organization. These and other proceeds from Nelson’s fund-raising event will go directly to the children and families that Wediko serves.

In a further effort to incorporate community support, the fundraiser will include a raffle of items graciously contributed by area businesses. Prizes donated include tickets to upcoming shows at Johnny D’s Uptown Restaurant (17 Holland St), fresh produce from Red Fire Farm of Granby, Berkshire Brewing Company growlers and a gift basket from Davis Square’s newly opened pet shop Bone Appetit (389 Highland Ave).

The Women’s Rugby World Cup begins August 20 at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, England. Jamie Burke, co-captain of Team USA, is a Somerville resident.

One of 12 international teams to qualify for the World Cup, Team USA enters the tourney in “Pool B,” along with England, Ireland and Kazakhstan. The first match is against Kazakhstan on August 20. “We don’t know a lot about Kazakhstan, and they are the reigning Asian champs,” says Burke. “We haven’t played them before. They tend to run some nontraditional positions and roles so it could be a little confusing on defense.”

Only six of the team’s 26 members have playing experience from the 2006 World Cup, at which Team USA placed fifth. Burke is one of the six. “We’ve been trying to impart [to the newcomers] how intense it is, spending a month playing rugby in this high-pressure environment of international matches,” she says. “The World Cup is its own beast.”

The tournament runs through September 6.
