Calendar Highlight – For the Kids!

This kid is totally bored! Get her to the Community Growing Center, quick!
So all kids have different personalities, different interests, different likes and dislikes, of course. But every summer, there seems to be one similarity that surpasses everything else : after finishing the school year, all kids become plagued with boredom. I myself recall whining three little words frequently in June, July, and August: “Moooooooom I’m BORED!”
So to help I’ve put together a small sampling of this weekend’s activities for kids in Somerville based on three different personality types. For more stuff to do in the city for kids and families, be sure to check the Scout’s calendar.
For the Quiet, Book -Wormy Type: According to the Somerville Public Library, kids entering 2nd -4th grades who “enjoy deep listening and thoughtful discussion” are best suited for Water: A Philosophical Dip. The event, part of a Philosophy for Kids series, will include songs, activities, and discussion aimed at exploring water on a deeper level and will pose questions such as, “Does water have rights?” Thursday, 2pm. Somerville Library, Central Branch, 79 Highland Avenue. http://www.somervillepubliclibrary.org/
For the Outdoorsy Type: We’ve covered the book worms, but what about the kids who…just love worms? There’s Critters in the Soil at the Community Growing Center. This program is led by environmental educator Paula Jordan and promises to add information and education to the usual romp in the dirt. Sponsored by the Friends of the Community Growing Center’s Children in Nature Initiative. For children ages 3-5. Friday, 1-3pm. 22 Vinal Avenue. http://www.thegrowingcenter.org/
For the Sports Fan (or the Aspiring Police Officer): Come watch law enforcement officials, youth service workers and local teens battle it out on the basketball court during the Annual Metro Mayors Basketball Tournament. Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Quincy, Revere, Winthrop and Somerville all have teams participating in this five-on-five tournament hosted by the Metro Mayors Coalition. 9:30am-2pm. Trum Field. http://www.mapc.org/regional-collaboration/metro-mayors-coalition
