Calendar Highlight – ArtBeat
Davis Square festival ArtBeat starts tonight. Each year the festival, organized by the Somerville Arts Council, centers on a theme that will get the community’s creative juices flowing…and that’s a particularly apt metaphor for this year’s theme: water.
The fruits of that creative flow will flood Davis Square, starting tonight with musical performances from Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys, Death Vessel, and Bearstronaut, to name a few. The music continues on Saturday with over a dozen bands and performers.
The relationship between music and water is also explored at Hydro-Jamm, an interactive sound installation that uses fountain jets, located in Statue Park. But Statue Park won’t really be Statue Park: tomorrow it’s actually Totem Island, and it will be filled with tiki-head totems made from recycled water bottles and laundry detergent bottles.
For the kids there’s “A Pirate’s Life,” presented by Moonship Productions, with sea-shanties and tales of pirate lore. Kids can get decked out for their pirate lives with eyepatches, telescopes, and fake parrots provided by the pirate costume-making booth, and then show-off their duds in the pirate parade.
There will also be craft vendors, tables of local groups (such as Somerville Garden Club), and food (Dave’s Fresh will be grilling up sandwiches and serving homemade lemonade!).
So tonight and tomorrow get a break from the heat and take a dip in Artbeat!
